As I began working with Carolyn I would describe my life as 'on the verge'. I was constantly on the verge of angry outbursts, brewing resentment, and explosive responses. I felt like I was failing as a mom, partner, friend, and human. Carolyn held space for me to explore all of these internal stories I was telling myself. I felt safe and comfortable laying all my cards on the table and sorting through the murky water, and "reopening the wound" as Carolyn put it.
My largest insight came right after a session with Carolyn that was especially heavy for me. I was able to approach a conversation with my partner coming from an avenue of genuine curiosity, hopeful for sustained change and here I felt the anger begin to melt away and a wall begin to come down. Sometimes the wound needs to be reopened again for things to heal stronger and healthier, which is exactly what Carolyn was able to help guide me through.
Carolyn allowed me to sit with my anger without trying to fix things or make it better. I recognized the primary emotions as fear, disappointment and hurt and the secondary emotion that was often being displayed was anger. From the beginning, I was able to identify, I needed alone time to refill my cup. Carolyn held me accountable for penciling that much needed space into my calendar. This allowed me to move through the anger in a healthy outlet and sift through it to emerge a bit lighter, more kind and loving towards my partner.”

When I started with Carolyn I was at a point where I really wanted to work on my health. My life is very busy and chaotic. The thought of having to cook separate meals from my family, and all the work that would entail, was overwhelming and stressful. I also have some health challenges that make exercise more difficult. Carolyn helped me to see that small changes could add up to big results over time. It helped to set simple goals, like eating a fruit or vegetable with every meal. That was doable to me! She also encouraged me to write down why I wanted to get healthy, and what my life would look like in 10 years if I made the effort, or if I didn't. One of my new goals became to read this every day. It was good for me to think long term instead of just in the middle of daily stress.
The last big goal that I am continuing even after our sessions are over, is to exercise for 20 minutes most days. The first week my goal was only for 5 minutes, but now I'm up to 20 and I often go over that time limit. I am exercising more and I am seeing results. I feel like I have a more positive mindset, which is half the battle! It was also really helpful to have someone to be accountable to. She was always kind and always steered me back to why this was important and challenged me to set quantifiable goals. I will continue implementing these changes and look forward to the future.
